Station Gallery is pleased to present Lisa Town’s solo show Falda in an exciting opportunity for the community to engage with her through the exhibition, and a paper mache workshop.

Lisa is a Whitby based multidisciplinary artist working primarily in mixed media. Influenced by a mural painted on her family’s Mexican home, her practice draws from the visual language of the street — its textures, fragments, and everyday narratives. Falda is informed by Town’s recent travels throughout Mexico, including time spent in Guadalajara, her mother’s birthplace. This journey functioned as both personal exploration and cultural research.

Town’s mother immigrated to Canada as a child and later integrated into Canadian culture as a means of both belonging and survival. Later attempts to reconnect her children with Mexican heritage were marked by silence and resistance, with cultural expression often subdued or hidden. One recurring exception was a painted skirt — a domestic object that resurfaced across years and quietly carried a sense of patriotism and lineage. Its significance became clear to Town only through deeper engagement with family history and place.

Falda explores themes of immigration, assimilation, and cultural inheritance. The exhibition reflects on how identity is negotiated across generations and how cultural memory persists through objects. In the context of ongoing social and political shifts in Mexico, Falda offers a timely meditation on belonging, resilience, and the enduring importance of connection to lineage.
