A graduate of The Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Halifax and the student exchange program at The Cooper Union, New York, Sean McQuay is an inter-disciplinary artist currently living and working in the Durham Region.

As educator, Sean McQuay was integral in the development of Durham College’s first Fine Arts Advanced program in which he still currently teaches and coordinates. As curator of exhibitions at Durham College he has overseen more than two decades worth of student showcases, both on campus and in our regional public art galleries. Sean is the recipient of various Ontario and Canada Council arts awards with works found in many public and private art collections. An artist whose work at times takes inspiration from long distance walks through natural and urban environments both in Britain and locally, McQuay has an abiding interest in pareidolic observation, often manipulating photographic transparencies by flipping, merging and layering to reveal the underlying phantasms hidden within. Recent developmental plans for singling out and referencing these ambiguous ‘found’ images by applying varied paint mediums are in the works.
